I have tried running DDS several times now, followed by hard shut downs. No DDS.txt or Attach.txt logs ever appeared. A row of what looks like ":::::::::::::::::" runs across the bottom of the screen and then the cursor freezes (requiring a hard shut down). Using Task Manager and Firefox (since IE won't open now), I downloaded and ran DDS. I have since done more recent scans with Malwarebytes, AVG, and Spybot, all updated. I also tried chkdsk c: /p to no avail (although Windows fixed one or more errors), as well as trying sfc /scannow. At this point, should I download and install Service Pack 3 again from Windows Update or leave it with SP 2 until I get this problem resolved? I then did a repair install with my Dell XP Service Pack 2 Reinstallation CD, which replaced my XP Service Pack 3 (and all it's security updates) with Service Pack 2. Since then, I was going to try going yet further back, but now I see that all points prior to this problem have disappeared from the Restore option. Initially, I restored to a previous good configuration point/date. (No infections found in over two months.) ) This AVG Identity Protection activity was a surprise, as I had just updated and scanned with AVG the previous evening. (However, in the AVG Vault, it appears with the name NIRCMD.EXE - not USERINIT.EXE. (I was informed that Malware.gen sometimes masquerades as USERINIT.EXE. And I don't recall downloading anything recently, except for Rkill and Malwarebytes. I routinely clean my temp folders with CCleaner every day or so. I don't know where this might have came from. Settings\Owner\ Local Settings\TEMP\RARSFXD\USERINIT.EXE which it said contained "Malware.gen" (a "downloader"). While I was running Malwarebytes, AVG's Identity Protection box popped up and reported an infection in C:\Documents and (The Malwarebytes log from this event is attached, in case anyone is interested.) Explorer.exe runs only for a few moments in Task Manager Processes. Processes terminated by Rkill or while it was running:Ĭ:\Program Files\AVG\AVG10\Identity Protection\Agent\Bin\AVGIDSAgent.exeĪfter downloading and scanning with Malwarebytes, however, my Desktop taskbar & icons were missing. My computer was running fine, but a little slow, and a friend recommended Rkill and Malwarebytes.
